Spa on the Sofa

We’re in Lockdown right now (obviously) and I have vowed to come out of this situation better looking than I went in.

I’ve been chilling on the sofa for  more than a few nights so I decided to make the living room my personal spa. And by using the resources I have already got at home. It’s a super easy way to chill out at home! I also recommend trying to get your hubby or family involved too!

Firstly I wash my hair with my current favourite shampoo Keep Me Vivid (It does change a lot) and then give it a good towel dry. Then I comb through some Hydrasource Conditioning treatment. And I clip my hair up out of the way, or you could use a cool hair wrap like this one!! Hair is wrapped up getting rehydrated and I’m going to make sure it has plenty of time to get conditioned while I continue my essential maintenance.

I’ve the hair half sorted, now it’s time to pop on my lovely Cuddly Dressing Gown  (now in the sale) and get everything else prepped.

Mask Time: I’m not really a fan of sheet masks but I did see a video of someone using a Jade Roller over the top of her face mask, I know I have a few sheet masks sitting on my bathroom shelf and a roller in my drawer that never gets used! So I’m trying that! Here are a few popular  Sheet masks from Beauty Bay. Or you can check out this facebook group “Treat Yourself” full of body shop beauties or Click here to take you to the body shop website.

Feet: So I don’t have a fancy foot spa (yet) I use a good old kitchen basin! I make sure there’s loads of bubbles obviously, I generally use shower gel and I start it off with a good Foot Scrub and then soak. I’ve started popping in some essential oils into the foot bath too. Nice scrub and a good long soak, then I like to finish it all off with a nice massage using some Foot Cream, and get them toes painted.

Then it’s time to take the mask off and pop on my usual skincare and rinse out my conditioning treatment. I could say I go on to give myself a powerful blow-dry, but to be honest I usually let it dry naturally. I give it a light towel dry then, I spray some Miracle Creator Treat 20 (aka Magic spray) and use a little MATRIX style link Smooth Setter soothing Cream throughout my mid lengths and ends then I sprits some High Amplify Wonder Boost into my roots, give it a wee shake up and that’s usually my pamper time done.

I definitely don’t do a pamper night as much as I want to or should do for that matter. I usually only do one of the many steps. But when I do the full works I get the best sleep after.

I hope you guys feel inspired to switch up your nights in! Until next time

Lockdown Locks

e3e5527e-1f17-4ec7-8715-becc8c4387f7Ok so we’re all in lockdown, not going to see anyone for possibly a few months. You’ve missed your hair, nail and brow appointments, and you’ve roots like you’ve never seen them before. Not to mention the new and unusual tone of your mid lengths and ends.

What’s a girl to do?

….. Just deal with it, we are all in the same boat.

You might think us hairdressers are saying this because we don’t want you to realise you can just wack a box kit in and be grand. We’re saying this because we don’t know what’s in box kits. when we are colouring your hair in the salon we don’t just pick a colour you like and stick it on. We have to think about what way your hair has been treated already, underlying tones, the length of regrowth.

But anyway I’m here to talk about how you’re going to survive the next few weeks, not only missing your much loved hairdressers but getting to grips with those pesky roots.

Now is the perfect time to get ready for a change of colour or revamp when the salons are open again. By not colouring  your hair for a few weeks means there is going to be less colour build up as your colour will have gradually faded out, meaning that when you’re back in the hot seat it will be easier to do a bigger colour change or of going a lot lighter. Just don’t forget to mention to your stylist when you’re getting booked in again!

It’s also a really good time to help grow out a short cut, or a fringe.

It’s great for all you guys thinking about going back to your natural colour.

I know that’s everyones cup of tea and you just want to disguise those pesky roots here’s some of my tips:

Volume: And lots of it! (I use Matrix Amplify Wonder Boost  ) by lifting the hair from your scalp you’re hiding the roots, if your hair is extra flat just pop in some dry shampoo. (Dry shampoo is also great if you’re blonde and have darker roots.) Use rollers or backcombing to help get that extra oomf.

Get creative with hair bands, bows and clips: its simple, distract from the roots by using an awesome hair accessory. and the crazier the better. (because you know what? no one can see you!) if that’s not your thing…a big ass hat!! we’ll all be rocking big sun hats soon.

Messy Hair Don’t Care: a messy plait or up style will disguise the roots with added volume and body.

Curls: This works the same way as the volume and messy hair, it’s giving you added height and movement so your roots don’t look as noticeable.

Clean hair: When your hair Is freshly washed your roots never look as bad as what they do when you’re needing a wash.

Embrace them: show your roots. we are all in this together and we are all going to have bad roots soon enough, even us hairdressers.

So don’t panic about them just yet, take this time to focus on your hairs condition by enjoying a pampering conditioning treatment while you’re doing a Netflix marathon, learn how to do something different with your hair like curling with your straighteners or a new plaiting technique. Or if you’re like me embrace the hun bun!!

I hope this helps you, I’d love to hear what you guys are up to in isolation.

Colour fade!!

Let’s talk about colour fade. I know this is a pesky problem almost ever person who colours their hair faces at one stage or another! And with our out of the ordinary weather we’re having over here in NI we’re seeing an awful lot more lately.

From blondes that get an ashy or pearly toner, pastel shades right up to rainbow hair there’s so much we’re doing that adds to colour fade!

1- The sun, even when we think we aren’t getting any or much this affects your colour, ever wonder why when your hair is down along the parting is a completely different colour to the back or lower sections of your hair? That’s the sun!! Ghd make a brill uv heat protection spray, to protect from not only your styling tools but also the sun! if you’re going to be out and about in the sun try and protect it from sun damage!

2- OBVIOUSLY your shampoo choice makes a difference! Ask your hairdresser what they recommend. For me I’m loving the MATRIX Keep Me Vivid Range, both on my own hair and the results from clients is amazing! If you are using certain shampoos or products on your hair you could be creating a build up or a fine layer of shampoo, conditioner or product that actually acts as a barrier towards your colour making it harder to penetrate your hair and also making the colour result unpredictable.

3- Heat Damage! This is probably one of the biggest offenders! Straightening that front piece of hair fifty times a week will weaken your hair and then it will inevitably loose colour because you’re damaging it and it can no longer hold onto your colour like it should! If you’re going to use any heat (straighteners, tongs, wands, hairdryers or even heated rollers) near your hair USE A HEAT PROTECTOR!!

4- General wear and tear. I’m talking to you mrs hun bun, don’t get we wrong a bun is quite possibly the easiest way to get your hair out of your way, but doing it repeatedly over time will weaken it and cause damage around where the bobble is, not to mention when you don’t brush it for days, tugging away will break and damage your hair further…. and you guessed it this leads to colour fade! Prevent this by trying out different styles, plaits are hard to beat and we have no excuses with the amount of affordable hair accessories available now!

5- Over processed hair! Hair that has been coloured and coloured over and over! This is different to getting your roots done often. When you colour your natural hair you create a chemical reaction and change the structure of your hair, if this fades you do not need to re colour with the same colour as this is changing the chemical structure of your hair. It should be noted now that once you have broken ends there is NO way to ‘heal’ them! You simply need to call your hairdresser stat and get a trim or cut booked!!

Certain colours will fade quicker than others and it does depend on what your hair condition is like to start with! I am always reluctant to colour badly damaged hair as it will weaken it further!

Blues are going to fade first! Blue has the biggest colour molecules so they will leave your hair first, so if you have a silver, platinum, purple, pink or ashy colour the blue will fade and leave you with a warmer or brassy colour.

Bright colours will fade or wash out over time, pastel colours because they’re usually on more porous hair might wash out super quick.I always recommend in between toners and a good aftercare package with all colours especially a bright or vivid colour!

So basically what I’m saying is your hair is going to fade and we should all be doing our best to keep it bright and vibrant!
